VitalSource Bookshelf allows for one computer and one mobile devices activated at any given one time on your account. If you are activating a new computer or mobile device, and receive the error message: "You have Reached your Machine Activation Limit" you will need to deauthorize an older computer or mobile device in order to activate a new one.


Device-specific instructions for managing activations are below. If you do not know what platform you are on, follow the instructions under "Managing your activations from a browser":


  • Managing your activations from a browser
    1. Go to the VitalSource Account Center and sign in with your username and password;
    2. In navigation bar, click on Devices;
    3. Find the device you wish to disable and click on the Deactivate button;
    4. Sign into Bookshelf with your login credentials.

  • Managing your activations from Bookshelf Desktop:
    1. After receiving the Activation Error message in Bookshelf, click on the Help Me resolve this error link;
    2. Bookshelf will sign you into the VitalSource Account Center (requires Bookshelf 7.0 Mac and 7.2 Windows);
    3. In navigation bar, click on Devices;
    4. Find the device you wish to disable and click on the Deactivate button;
    5. Click on the Back to Application button;
    6. Sign into Bookshelf with your login credentials.

  • Managing your activations from Bookshelf for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch:
    1. After receiving the Activation Error message in Bookshelf, tap on Ok in the dialog box;
    2. Bookshelf will open a pop-up and sign you into the VitalSource Account Center ;
    3. In navigation bar, click on Devices;
    4. Find the device you wish to disable and click on the Deactivate button;
    5. Click on the button in the top left of the screen to return to Bookshelf and sign-in.

  • Managing your activations from Bookshelf for Android/Kindle Fire:
    1. After receiving the Activation Error message in Bookshelf, Tap on the Help button;
    2. A new browser window will open, and Bookshelf will sign you into the VitalSource Account Center;
    3. In navigation bar, click on Devices;
    4. Find the device you wish to disable and click on the Deactivate button;
    5. Toggle back to Bookshelf;
    6. Tap the Close button to sign into Bookshelf.

If the issue persists, please submit a request for assistance via the IATA Customer Portal. Provide the following information:

  • Name of the publication;
  • Platform:
    • Bookshelf Online (specify browser;)
    • Bookshelf app (specify operating system: Windows, macOS, iOS or Android;)
  • A brief description of the issue, including any relevant error message;
  • The name of the device(s) on which the product has been activated.
